The LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a unique 20-character code that identifies companies and legal entities involved in financial transactions worldwide.
Its main purpose is to increase transparency in financial markets and make it easier to identify the parties participating in global operations.
In Spain (and most other countries), this number is required for companies that operate in financial markets, such as those trading securities, derivatives, or investment products.
🔢 What information does the LEI contain?
The LEI code consists of 20 alphanumeric characters that provide information about:
The issuing organization.
The identity of the company (legal name, address, country, tax ID, etc.).
Its ownership structure (for example, if it belongs to a corporate group).
🧾 How to obtain a LEI number
You can request a LEI entirely online through one of the entities authorized by the GLEIF (Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation), which are responsible for issuing these codes in each country.

The company’s incorporation certificate or deed.
The legal representative’s identification document.
